How to get invoices paid by UPI

Updated 1 November 2026 · EasyInvoices guides

Your clients already pay by UPI every day. The friction is in the details: they need your UPI ID, the exact amount and the invoice number, and you then have to work out which payment belongs to which invoice. Putting the payment on the invoice itself removes most of that.

Three ways to take UPI on an invoice

What goes into a UPI pay link

A UPI link (and the QR that encodes it) carries your UPI ID, your name, the amount and a note. For example:

upi://pay?pa=yourfirm@okhdfcbank&pn=Your%20Firm&am=17700.00&cu=INR&tn=Invoice%20INV%2F26-27%2F41

When the client scans it, their UPI app opens with everything filled in. On a phone, the same link opens the app directly, so a "Pay" button works without a QR.

What is a UTR and why ask for it?

Every UPI payment has a 12-digit reference, shown in the payer's app as UTR, RRN or UPI reference number. It also appears against the credit in your bank statement. When a client pays to your UPI ID directly, asking for the UTR is the fastest reliable way to match the payment to the invoice.

Personal UPI ID or business UPI ID?

Use a business (merchant) UPI ID from your bank or a business payments app for invoice payments. It keeps business receipts separate from personal ones, and some UPI apps limit or show warnings for larger payments to personal UPI IDs.

When a payment gateway is worth it

Avoiding double payments

A QR for a fixed amount can be paid twice by mistake. Gateways solve this with single-use QR codes that close after one payment. With a direct UPI ID, check the UTR before marking an invoice paid, and refund any duplicate promptly.

Common questions

Is there a fee for UPI payments to my UPI ID?

UPI payments made directly to your bank's UPI ID typically carry no fee for you. Payment gateways charge their own rates for UPI collected through them.

Can a client fake a UTR?

Yes, someone could type a made-up number. Always confirm the credit in your bank or UPI app before marking the invoice paid. Gateways avoid this because they confirm the payment themselves.

Can I put a UPI QR on a PDF invoice?

Yes. A QR encoding a UPI pay link works printed or on screen. Make sure it includes the exact amount so the client cannot pay the wrong figure.

This guide explains common practice and is not tax or legal advice. Rules change; confirm anything that affects your filings with your CA.

EasyInvoices puts a UPI QR and a pay button for your own UPI ID on every invoice, with zero fees. Razorpay, for automatic confirmation, is coming soon.
